History

A high-quality history education will help pupils gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world. It should inspire pupils’ curiosity to know more about the past.

Our History Curriculum

At Heath Mount, our vision is to encourage children to understand the world in which they live and gain an understanding of the past- a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world, with a strong grasp of chronology

We want pupils to understand the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups, as well understand their own identity and the challenges of their time.

We want to encourage them to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments, and develop perspective and come to judgements based on evidence.

We intend for our children to have real life experiences and learn about history in an active and creative way, so our History curriculum is further enhanced by the addition of visitors to the school, drama, use of artefacts, day trips and residential visits

Through all of this, we aim to cultivate a love of subject that propels students towards a future interest in the past. We want to inspire in pupils a curiosity and fascination about History that will remain with them for the rest of their lives. Through a high-quality History education, we want to encourage children to work as Historians.

 

As part of this planning and teaching process:

 

  • History is taught as part of the Humanities curriculum, alternating with Geography each half term

 

  • Lessons follow a structured TEEP cycle, which includes:

A prepare for learning activity- re-visiting prior learning

The introduction of new information and concepts through high quality teaching

The use of effective questioning to drive critical thinking and enquiry

The introduction of key and new vocabulary

A rich, challenging and engaging independent activity which allows children to sift through arguments, weigh evidence, develop perspective, apply new learning and draw conclusions of their own

A review of the learning through activities such as low stake quizzes and exit tickets

 

Our Curriculum Drivers

Our five core learning characteristics: Hard work, Enjoyment, Aspiration, Respect, Teamwork (HEART) are our key drivers. These form the backbone of our curriculum with each being built around the five most significant areas of need for OUR children and OUR community.

2.     Enjoyment – “Are children given the opportunity to engage with learning through creative and stimulating learning?”
